Review by hotel critic
Nestled just a 30-minute drive from the amazing Heaphy Track lies the Riverstone Retreat in Karamea, a sanctuary that exudes luxury and comfort. As a travel writer and beer enthusiast, I greatly appreciate accommodations that complement my adventures, and this gem certainly exceeded expectations. The chalet we stayed in featured a private balcony offering stunning views of the gardens and river, providing a serene backdrop for evening reflections with my travel companions. From the moment we arrived, Anne Marie’s warm welcome set the tone for our stay, enhanced by thoughtful touches like fresh yogurt and berries waiting in the fridge—ideal after our long trek. Spacious and immaculately clean, the chalet boasted a kitchen that had everything we needed, and the opulently appointed bathroom—with its rain shower and underfloor heating—was a particular highlight that transformed our morning routine into a spa-like experience. What makes Riverstone Retreat stand out, apart from the fabulous landscape views of Kahurangi National Park, is the tranquility it offers while being so close to nature and local activities. Be sure to dedicate some time to explore the area—between the relaxation of the fantastic spa pool and the allure of nearby walks, there’s a perfect blend of adventure and repose waiting just outside your door. I left with a sense of peace and a desire to return for a longer stay, and I wholeheartedly recommend this really good retreat for anyone looking to connect with the beauty of New Zealand while savoring a touch of luxury.
